Dobërdol is one of the most remote and beautiful alpine places in northern Albania, hidden deep in the Albanian Alps near the borders with Kosovo and Montenegro. It is not a typical village, but a seasonal shepherd settlement, used mainly in the summer months when local families bring their animals to the high mountain pastures. The area is surrounded by dramatic peaks, green valleys, mountain streams, wooden huts, and wide open meadows that give visitors the feeling of stepping into an older, quieter world.

Historically, Dobërdol belongs to the traditional highland culture of Tropojë, where life was shaped by livestock, mountain routes, family hospitality, and seasonal movement between valleys and summer pastures. The nearby Gashi River Valley is one of Albania’s most important natural areas. Its upper valley is protected as the Gashi River Strict Nature Reserve, and part of it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for ancient and primeval beech forests in 2017. 

Dobërdol is also an important point on the famous Peaks of the Balkans trail, a cross-border hiking route connecting Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. From here, travellers can continue towards Kosovo, explore alpine lakes, or hike towards Gjeravica, the highest peak in Kosovo.

Important note for visitors: Dobërdol is remote and access depends on weather and road conditions. A proper 4×4 vehicle, local knowledge, or an experienced guide is strongly recommended. The best season is usually late spring to early autumn, when the mountain tracks and guesthouses are accessible.
