The Shala River, known in Albanian as Lumi i Shalës, is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in northern Albania. Surrounded by the dramatic mountains of the Albanian Alps, it is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water, steep rocky canyons and peaceful, secluded atmosphere. Visitors can swim, kayak, relax on the small river beaches or explore the surrounding mountain landscape.

The Shala Valley also has an interesting cultural history. For centuries, it was home to the Shala highland tribe, one of the traditional communities of the Dukagjin region. Despite the valley’s isolation and centuries of Ottoman rule, its inhabitants preserved their Catholic faith, local customs and strong mountain identity. 

Today, the Shala River is normally reached by boat across Lake Koman, making the journey itself part of the experience. The scenic cruise passes through narrow, fjord-like gorges before reaching the river’s turquoise waters. It is an ideal destination for a day trip, although staying overnight allows visitors to enjoy the valley after the daytime crowds have lef.
