Spac Prison

Spaç Prison is a former political prison and forced-labour camp located in the remote mountains of the Mirdita region. From 1968, prisoners—mainly opponents of Albania’s communist regime—were forced to work in harsh conditions in copper and pyrite mines. In 1973, a courageous prisoners’ revolt took place here, becoming a powerful symbol of resistance against the dictatorship. Today, the abandoned buildings of Spaç remain one of Albania’s most moving memorial sites.
